Useful information for nannies

You will of course be invited to attend an interview, and the following tips should prove useful in giving the right impression to your potential employers. Hire a Nanny have produced a guide to help you with your interview. Please click here to obtain a printable copy.

  • Don't be late. If driving, allow for known (and possible unknown) traffic hold-ups, and parking problems in towns and cities. If using public transport make sure that bus/train arrival time is not too close for comfort to you appointment times. Likewise do not arrive too early, a cushion of a few minutes ahead of the appointment is plenty.

  • Dress appropriately. First impressions count, so if in doubt, contact us at Hire A Nanny for advice.

  • Research the job you're applying for, so that you can ask intelligent and informed questions (and answer those from the family). Review the family profile from Hire a Nanny to prepare the questions on topics that matter to you in advance and be sure to ask them. Make a list of the questions and take them with you to the interview. Contact us if you need help.

  • Make sure that you understand what your duties will be, your pay and conditions, holidays and time off etc. An overlooked detail can be a source of real problems. An example being that you may assume that you'll have private use of a car but the family may not intend this to be the case.

  • Let them see the real you - if you put on an 'act' to get through the interview you won't be able to keep it up once you're working for them. Simply relax and have a free and frank discussion with the family about the job they want you to do for them and their children.

You may also find the directgov website useful in helping you to prepare. Although the site has been produced with the employer in mind it will give you detailed information about the questions the family may ask you and also sets out your statutory rights as an employee.
